Jueun Lee is an atmospheric scientist who studies how large-scale atmospheric circulation is being reorganized under human-accelerated warming, and how that reorganization translates into extremes such as heatwaves, droughts, cold spells, and floods. In his doctoral work, he used global climate models and large-ensemble simulations to document how Northern Hemisphere winter stationary waves have amplified in recent decades, and to diagnose the influence of these circulation changes on regional extremes across North America and East Asia.

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Anthropocene Studies at KAIST, where he works on extreme fire weather. Focusing on land-atmosphere interactions, he investigates how nonlinear soil-moisture thresholds trigger rapidly evolving extreme fire-weather conditions that develop explosively over a few days. Building on cases of such rapid onset, and including South Korea’s record 2025 wildfire, he leverages global Earth System models with hydrodynamic models to trace the physical processes linking the atmosphere, land surface, and hydrological cycle. Through this work, he aims to diagnose which forcings intensify the extremes of the Anthropocene, and to assess the future risks that regional communities will face.
