Heejin Choi holds an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University. Her doctoral dissertation, Infrastructures of Cruel Optimism (2026), examined women’s labour as infrastructural repair in a South Korean coastal community, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and filmmaking. Her master’s thesis (2017) analysed the closure of the red-light district near Suwon Station through the lens of gender governance. Working at the intersection of gender and urban planning, she has asked how urban development reshapes the lives of individuals and communities, and on whom its costs fall.

As a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Anthropocene Studies, KAIST, she is exploring the places where the traces of the Anthropocene accumulate, through sensory and visual methods. She approaches the Great Acceleration as what it has left in places and in the senses of those who live there, asking how those traces settle into women’s bodies and labour.
