지구를 뜨겁게 만들어서 결국에는 인류를 멸망시킬 것이라는 탄소. 그 탄소는 과연 어디에서 얼마나 나오고 있는가? <탄소를 세는 사람들>은 서울 신도림의 고층빌딩에서, 서해안 새만금 갯벌의 진흙 위에서, 강원도 평창의 축사에서, 일본 홋카이도의 깊은 숲 속에서 탄소의 숫자를 측정하는 과학자들의 활동을 기록한다. 자동차가 배출하는 탄소, 갯벌이 흡수하는 탄소, 숲이 저장하는 탄소, 소가 내뿜는 탄소를 믿을 만한 숫자로 번역하기 위해 과학자들은 타워에 오르고, 땅을 파고, 기계를 설치한다. 정확하려고 매번 노력하지만 그 숫자는 늘 만족스럽지 않다. 새어나가는 온실가스를 숫자로 붙잡아 두려는 시도를 통해 탄소는 그저 하나의 원소가 아니라 누군가의 고민과 열정이 된다. 이것은 출처와 정체가 불분명했던 탄소의 “이름을 불러주는” 과학이다. <탄소를 세는 사람들>은 우리가 생성하고 있는 탄소의 숫자가 과연 살 만한 지구를 만들기 위한 기후정책의 기반이 될 수 있는지 묻는다.
Film Synopsis (ENG)
We often say that the relentless emission of carbon by humanity will ruin our home planet and eventually ourselves. But where are these carbons coming from? Carbon Counters follows the scientists who strive to measure the amount of carbon emission and absorption at various and unexpected places: a skyscraper in the center of metropolitan Seoul, muddy tidal flats at the western coast of Korea, an experimental barn in rural Korea, and deep boreal forests in the north of Hokkaido, Japan. In their efforts to capture the elusive carbon into fixed numbers, the scientists climb up observation towers, construct experimental chambers, and dig into the ground for soil samples. The carbon numbers they produce are never perfectly accurate, which is why counting carbon becomes somebody’s passion, concern, and even occupation. Following the scientific attempts to name the nameless carbon with numbers, this documentary film asks whether our knowledge of the quantity of carbon is trustworthy enough as we continue to rely on it in the age of the exacerbating climate crisis.
