The Anthropocene and the Great Acceleration have placed biology and agriculture at the center of transformations reshaping human societies and the global environment. At the same time, these fields are becoming key sites of technoscientific intervention in response to climate change and biodiversity loss. The Biology, Agriculture, & Society research group examines how the biological sciences, emerging technologies, and agricultural infrastructures reconfigure relationships among humans, other forms of life, institutions, and environments. Its research ranges from multispecies landscapes formed through rice farming and coastal reclamation to the technological and institutional arrangements emerging around synthetic biology and biofoundries. The group currently participates in Global Centers for Biofoundry Applications (GCBA), a five-country collaboration supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (Korean project title: Biofoundry Global Center for Standardized Automated Workflows and Advanced Microbial Cell Factory Development). Across these areas, the group explores the multispecies and societal futures arising from transformations in biology and agriculture, along with the knowledge, spaces, and forms of governance needed to shape these futures responsibly.

인류세와 대가속의 흐름 속에서 생물학과 농업은 인간 사회와 지구환경을 변화시켜 온 핵심 영역인 동시에, 기후위기와 생물다양성 감소에 대응하기 위한 새로운 과학기술적 개입의 장이 되고 있다. Biology, Agriculture, & Society 그룹은 쌀농업과 간척지에서 형성되는 다종적 경관부터 합성생물학과 바이오파운드리가 만들어내는 새로운 기술적·제도적 질서에 이르기까지, 생명과학기술과 농업 인프라가 인간과 비인간 생명, 사회와 제도의 관계를 어떻게 재구성하는지 탐구한다. 현재 미국 국립과학재단(NSF)이 지원하는 5개국 협력과제 Global Centers for Biofoundry Applications(GCBA)(한국 과제명: 「글로벌 바이오파운드리 네트워크를 통한 표준화된 자동화 워크플로와 첨단 미생물 세포공장 개발」)에 참여하고 있으며, 생물학과 농업의 변화가 열어놓는 다종적·사회적 미래와 이를 책임 있게 형성하기 위한 지식, 공간, 거버넌스의 가능성을 모색하고 있다.
