Hanbyeol Jang

장한별 박사는 인류세 시대의 사회·환경적 전환을 탐구하는 인문지리학자다. 그는 미국 템플대학교에서 박사학위를 취득했으며, 박사학위논문에서는 해양 포유류인 고래를 중심으로 자연과 국가, 과학과 권력이 얽힌 해양지정학적 관계를 분석하였다. 인간과 비인간, 자원과 권력, 지역과 지구가 교차하는 지점에서 새로운 지리학적 질문을 제기해온 그는, 특히 동아시아의 역사적·정치적 맥락 속에서 인류세의 의미를 비판적으로 조명하고 있다.

현재 그는 KAIST 인류세 연구센터에서 박사후연구원으로 재직 중이며, 자연, 에너지, 인프라가 교차하는 경계지대를 중심으로 연구를 수행하고 있다. 광산 지역과 댐과 저수지와 같은 인프라에서 인류세적 전환이 만들어내는 경관을 기록하고 해석하며, 이론적·경험적 탐구를 이어가고 있다.

Hanbyeol Jang is a human geographer whose research explores the socio-environmental transformations of the Anthropocene, with a particular focus on East Asia’s historical and geopolitical contexts. His work examines the entangled relationships between humans and nonhumans, resources and power, and the local and the planetary.

He received his Ph.D. from Temple University, where his dissertation investigated whales as geopolitical actors in East Asian maritime spaces. Through this lens, he revealed how nature, science, and the state intersect in legitimizing or marginalizing specific political discourses.

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Anthropocene Studies at KAIST, where he conducts research on boundary zones where nature, energy, and infrastructure intersect. His work focuses on documenting and interpreting landscapes shaped by Anthropocenic transitions in sites such as mining regions, dams, and reservoirs.
